Submarine Crisis: Biden and Macron agree to meet in October

Six days after the submarine crisis erupted, Joe Biden and Emmanuel Macron announced “commitments” to re-establish the tested confidence between Paris and Washington, with the US President acknowledging that “open consultations between allies” would have avoided these tensions. >

In this long-awaited phone call, the two presidents tried to find a solution to the most serious diplomatic crisis between the United States and France since the French rejection of the Iraq war in 2003.

A joint statement of the White House and the Elysee Palace said that holding “open consultations between allies on issues of strategic importance to France and European partners would have avoided this situation,” adding, “President Biden has expressed his permanent commitment to this regard,” while Paris accused him of acting like His predecessor is Donald Trump.

Consequently, the US and French presidents, who will meet “in Europe at the end of October,” decided to launch a process of in-depth consultation aimed at securing conditions that guarantee confidence and proposing concrete measures to achieve common goals.

In the context of this calm, Macron decided to return the French ambassador to the United States, Philippe Etienne, to Washington “next week.”
